3 stars to Sonia Parin's Sunny Side Up, the first issue in her "Deadline" Cozy Mystery series. I stumbled upon this free e-book last fall and thought it might be a fun read. As I was cleaning up my Kindle Reader on my iPad today, I re-found it and decided to give it a chance, since it was under 100 pages. Cute read, a bit simple, but has potential as a series.

Story
Eve Lloyd sold her NY restaurant and divorced her useless ex-husband, rented out her apartment on a six-month lease and took a trip to visit her aunt. But when she arrived, her aunt was gone and the townsfolk found Eve quite strange. She comes back from dinner with her aunt's real estate agent and finds a dead body in her kitchen with a woman she'd only met the day before, claiming she just walked in on the dead body. As she tries to establish her own alibi, and prevent the townsfolk from thinking she's guilty, Eve finds a few new friends and develops a crush on the detective. She's captured by the perpetrator before the end and almost meets her own maker, but luckily the detective saves her. And Eve learns what her ex-husband did to try to save her.

Strengths
A cute, fun, simple read... nice intro to the cast of characters and the town. Easy for a light afternoon. Good beginning for a new series that shows promise.

Suggestions
It needs depth. Dialogue was a little combative in the beginning. Wish I knew more about her parents and why she's so close to her aunt. Everything just sorta "comes together" as a setup for the series... just hoping it isn't always like that as it would be too simple.

Final Thoughts
It's a light-and-quick read in between complex plots or an emotional roller-coaster of a read. Give it a chance but look at it as just a couple of hours of fun.

Great Cozy Mystery and I want to Read More

I flew through this cozy mystery, I thought that the writing was polished and the dialogue fun! Eve comes to her Aunt Mira's beach house, after a difficult divorce, to figure out the next chapter in her life and for some relaxation. Little did she know that she would be embroiled in a murder and under the subject of scrutiny.

I enjoyed all the characters and thought they were fun. I did struggle with whether to rate it a 4 or a 5. Here is why: it is easy to figure out the "who done it" so I was really just reading how the characters got to the same conclusion rather than trying to solve it with them. I can live with that, but some folks might be disappointed. The plot is not terribly clever. Also there were times that Eve and Jill would kind of rehash points about the clues, but I got over that too. Oh and the beginning was slow going for me.

I decided on a 5 because there was great flow in the plot, there was an actual ending that I did not feel was rushed, AND the ending actually closed up the lingering aspects of the story so no plot holes. There were no obvious editing mistakes ( a huge problem with new kindle books lately). No lengthy descriptions about people, places or events, she let you use your imagination a bit. Attraction to the hunky detective was not lame or overdone. Last the author made me want to buy more of her books because I was interested in Eve's next adventure. I have not had a abundance of luck lately with free books and with this one had zero regrets so bumped it to 5 stars but for sure a solid 4 star. Thanks!

"Sunny Side Up" is the first book in "A Deadline Cozy Mystery" series by Sonia Parin. New York restaurant owner Eve Lloyd has survived an acrimonious divorce (her husband Alex drained her of all her money), rebuilt and sold her restaurant. Not sure of her next move, she heads out to visit her Aunt Mira (a well known historical romance author) on Rock-Maine Island. When Eve gets there, Mira is nowhere to be seen. This s not unusual for Mira to be gone without notice, but when she gets the call from Mira's travel agent about an upcoming trip - and the travel agent has no idea where Mira is - Eve begins to worry. Mira being Mira, she is also not answering her phone.

It gets worse - Eve's ex-husband, Alex, is found dead in Mira's kitchen. And handsome Detective Jack Bradford informs her that she is the beneficiary of Alex's estate, and that he took out a life insurance policy in her name. Does that make her a suspect? And what about Mira's cleaning lady, Jill Saunders. She just happens to be there when Eve walks in and finds books tossed from a living room bookcase all over the floor. What is up with her?

The characters are reasonably well developed, the story line takes several twists and turns, and the overall reading experience is a very positive one.

This was a really enjoyable book. It starts with Eve, a chef, who is divorced, recently sold her restaurant and has decided to relax at her aunt Mira’s house on the coast. Her aunt lives on an island right on the beach and Eve spent many summers with her so it feels like home. She tries to reach her aunt who is a romance writer, but her aunt isn’t answering her phone. When Eve arrives her aunt isn’t home but she has her own key so she makes herself at home. She finds out from the travel agent that her aunt isn’t on a trip that anyone knows about and so she assumes she has gone off to think, which is not unusual. There’s a complexity to the plot that I haven’t been seeing lately in cozy mysteries so I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The thing I couldn’t quite accept is that her aunt doesn’t try to call her about any of this and just disappears although it does add to the story. I highly recommend reading it!

When she arrives, she finds her Aunt has gone off on a trip. She runs into Jill Saunders, an islander who has a key to the house as she helps Mira with her admin. Eve is convinced she's being spotted upon, and when she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-husband who is found in her kitchen, she's even more convinced something is very wrong!

She has to get involved in the investigation in order to clear her name, and there she meets Detective Jack Bradford.

I enjoyed reading this cozy mystery and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I read the book late into the night and early morning - wanting to know what next, who did it from among the many suspects clearly layed out at the earlier chapters of the book.
Sonia captured my attention through her use of dialogue, language, hidden pointers in the form of questiobs and never-ending short and captivating chapters. The questions kept me guessing on 'who done it?
The ending, am still confused how thick the egg pot was as a murder weapon.

Eve the heroine of the story doesn't initially come across very likeable, however, as time goes she becomes a little less confrontational and a little more human!!

Eve has gone through an emotional divorce after her now ex-husband embezzled her business funds to fritter away. She's worked hard to get her restaurant back on track and now burnt out sold it on. Fed up with the frenetic pace of life in the city she decides to go to stay with her Aunt Mira on a quiet resort island with a slower pace of life.

When she arrives Mira is missing and someone/thing is lurking around the house in the dead of night. Where is Mira, neither her travel agent Helen or cleaner Jill have a clue. Then a body turns up in Mira's house while Eve is out and it just happens to be Eve's ex-husband.. with plenty of motives and having declared that she would happily murder him for all he's put her through who on earth has a better reason to murder him?

Enter the handsome detective Jack who's easy on the eye to even the jaded Eve. Will he assume the obvious conclusion as Eve's fingerprints are on the murder weapon or will he accept that she's not the culprit? She enlists the help of Jill to try and find the real murderer as all the small town gossips appear to be pointing their's fingers at her.
