Outstanding Novel, I Truly Miss it

I was so excited to read this book that I could not wait for the hard copy and bought it through Amazon Kindle and I truly, truly loved it. If you love reading, I recommend "Orphan In America", as beautifully written as the author herself. (I happen to know Nanette Lampl Avery as her little sister Louise was one of my best friends growing up in St. Thomas, USVI). When I finished the last chapter, I felt sad that it was finished but I was left with a good feeling, at times I felt compassion, at times it made me mad, at times scared and during it all, the descriptions were so realistic that it captivated my imagination and I was transferred back in time. Honestly, I have not enjoyed a novel as I have enjoyed "Orphan In America" in a very long time and I read a lot. Very well done Nanette Lampl Avery. I am going to read it again when I receive my hard copy. Friends, if you like a good novel, I give it 5 stars here on Amazon and would have given more but that was the best rating available. Congratulations Nanette Lampl Avery, you are a champion — I would so enjoy a sequel as I think of the characters often, This is the level of phenomenal that to me shows "Orphan in America" will quickly become a number one best seller.

Good story, strange ending

I enjoy books about the period in time when children were sent on orphan trains to new homes in the West. This book was interesting, as the story about the immigrant parents and how the boy came to be on the orphan train. However, the ending was just weird. It wasn't just a surprise, it really didn't fit the story.

I just started this novel and find the overworked prose and endless sentences to be a teeth-gritted attempt to be period accurate in its imitation of colloquial rustics' speech. It is tedious, like wading through mud. I don't know if I have the energy to read it. If the author had been more straightforward with the storytelling, I would enjoy it more, because the characters are quite colorful and interesting.

What a surprise to find that a child could be plucked from the loving care of his own parent and sent away to live with strangers,,,in this country! My heart went out to young Alex as he survives unspeakable loneliness,..and to Will as he doggedly seeks to reunite with his taken son. The author weaves two story lines into a rich tapestry of pathos and suspense, deserving of the many awards it has reaped.

I loved the story line even though there were historical inaccuracies . We went to the Orphan Train Museum this spring so I had a deep interest in reading this story. I couldn't put this book down. I'm not big on lots of descriptions but many people are. This book is very descriptive ! I hope you love it as much as I did!
