I have been a huge fan of "The Walking Dead", so when I started this book, I was expecting to read something along the same storyline at best, something very lame and boring at worst. What I read left me with a smile. Granted, most of these zombie-themed movies or shows will have the same tone to it (some virus causes people to die, and then re-animates them as the undead, causing havoc), but the author has given this story some uniqueness by adding a wolf in the midst, telling us that some are immune to this virus (I think), etc, which makes this story more interesting to me.

In addition to all the action, there is a decent smattering of romance - particularly the love-making scenes I thought were much bolder and intense than some I have read in these so called erotic books. I truly enjoyed those. Towards the end, just as they thought the apocalypse was over (which dismayed me a bit - I was like WTF), they realise that it isn't. I wonder what the author has in store for us next. Can't wait to start the next one. I have greatly reduced giving out 5 stars on reviews, but I can, without hesitation, dole out 5 stars to this book. I highly recommend it especially if you are a "walking dead" fan like me.

I have followed this author in the fantasy realm and see that he is branching out into the zombie genre, is that even a term? It must be! I thought the prologue was well written and interesting from a scientific stand point. I liked that there were different types of zombies based on when they fed. I also enjoyed that some of the story took place at a Renaissance Faire...that was unique and somewhat different.

Some of the things that I didn't understand or where the story broke down for me was that some things could have been better researched. The wolf in the story started to grow amazingly within months, I am not sure if it did this because of the constant zombie meat it was ingesting or what, but some of the physical things it did made me scratch my head. Most times it acted like a dog rather than a wolf. But hey we are dealing with Zombies and for the most part they do not make sense lol. I wish there was more descriptions of the zombies. They were easily dispatched which makes the differentiation of them being faster due to feeding not really understood, In terms of characters, I felt that the Main character in the story acted out of context and his interactivity with others given what he has gone through was a little off, in his actions and his dialogue with others. But maybe in a zombie world people act like they are living there last day and cannot dwell on the past too much or let it affect them? Lastly, I wish the story was a little longer, mostly to allow more character development, One of the other reviewers stated that it was hard to like or feel for the characters and I agree with that. But I think that could have been rectified by allowing the characters to develop over time.

All in all it was still a good read and a great start for Mr. Vanucci entering a different kind of genre than his past work. I look forward to more of these types of stories from Mr. Vanucci and so should you!

The premise of "Wake the Dead: A Graphic Zombie Apocalypse Novel" encouraged me to purchase this book. The zombies are already roaming the earth when a young man comes across a young wolf pup being attacked by a group of zombies. The protagonist comes to his rescue and they become life-long friends and watch each others' back. The author continues to make his point through the story about a pack mentality and the need for the main character to be the "Alpha Male" and show no fear..

I thought it was a unique twist when the main character reaches the site of a former Renaissance Festival and finding the surviving employees dressed in character and used swords, spears, body armor, and other weapons of the time when fighting the zombies. .

The author has created edge of your seat suspense in many of the scenes as the protagonist and his wolf are surely trapped and won't survive the experience. On a down note, the author writes explicit sex scenes for the main character in which he beds four different gorgeous women. One may be okay in a pinch, but four? I believe sex scenes are out of place in a zombie story...they just don't fit! Additionally, I found the writing in the last quarter of the story to be rushed and sketchy. There were also too many typo's and added or missing words from the text. I would strongly recommend an editor to go over it.

If you are a zombie addict, then don't buy this book! The graphic sex descriptions are extremely distracting and turned me off to the story - surely, it would do the same for you.

Wake the Dead by Gary Vanucci is an excellent introduction to a new apocalyptic world. With a brief introduction to how the zombie apocalypse, the story begins to follow Alex as he attempts to survive in heavily changed world. The author provides us with enough back story to grow a connection to the main character, and then jumps right into the action.

Basically written as three acts, we start with tragedy befalling Alex and his exodus into a zombie infested world. In the second act, Alex comes across a young wolf and finds a cabin in a secluded area where he sets up a base. While he tries to establish a new home for himself, he comes across another survivor and a relationship quickly blooms. Of course, nothing stable lasts in a zombie apocalypse and Alex soon finds himself on the move again. The third act find him meeting up with a group that is trying to gain control over a renaissance fare. The action is heaviest in this section, with an ending both unexpected and far from the norm in this kind of novel.

Overall I found this to be an incredibly fun read with a lot of twists and turns. Gary Vanucci certainly breathes some new life into the genre and I look forward to seeing what happens in his new world next.
