About the author
Hi, after writing a series of racy historical fiction under my own name I have turned to a life of crime and a criminal alias.
There are now five novels available in the DI Frank Lyle Mystery Series.
Second Chances, Heir to Misfortune, Unholy Alliance, Murder in the Wings and Best Served Cold as well as 2 volumes of short stories and novellas. DI Frank Lyle's Casebooks Vol 1 & 2.
The sixth novel Dead on Arrival will be published later this year.
A Winter Murderland is a collection of two novellas and 2 short stories. Prescription for Murder was a winner in Nanowrimo 2014. Old Sins Cast Long Shadows is a short book.
DI Frank Lyle is a compassionate man committed to truth and justice but he will learn that this can have a high personal cost. He is also rather dashing; being over 6ft tall and blonde with blue eyes. (just in case they ever make it for TV and Robert Bathurst is available.)
I recently completed a distance learning study course in Forensic Science under my real name, which has already paid dividends with regards to the series. I have also met a retired Police Constable who was serving at the time of the DI Lyle Series. Alistair Melling gives me procedural advice.
I read a lot of crime fiction & watch a lot of TV crime drama.

My Review: Frank Lyle is called on when the mutilated body of a clergyman is discovered. His team bands together to uncover secrets from Reverend Hayes' life in hopes his troubled past will give them clues as to who might have killed him. This case has Frank Lyle on edge and it doesn't help that an anonymous note delivered to his home casts uncertainty about his own family's safety. Time is of the essence and more people might be in danger than Lyle realized.
This is probably my favorite Frank Lyle mystery. It's by far the most complex and fast-paced story of the bunch. Frank is still true to character--he's loyal to his team, protective of his family, intelligent, and brave. Like the other Frank Lyle novels, the story takes a look at his personal life. We revisit a character from the past (Jez in Second Chances) and Frank finds some resolution in their relationship. We also experience Jayseera's struggles to reconcile her love of career with her love of family. Any mother who has ever faced the difficult task of leaving their new baby to go back to work will appreciate this subplot. Frank's struggle to balance family and career was something that created real conflict in Second Chances, but he seems to have found balance in this novel even though family and career dynamics are constantly changing.
This novel is as well-crafted and thoroughly researched as the previously novels in the series, but there's something very special about this book. Maybe it's because I feel like I know Frank and the other characters so well it's like reading about family. Or maybe it's because I read all three books back to back and witnessed how the author's writing style improved and evolved from book to book. I'll certainly be the first to buy the next book in the series. I'm hooked.
The story moved well and the characters are very quick witted and easy to love from the beginning. I do wish that I had a better understanding of the ranks for the police forces in England. Us sad American folks don't know these things.
I loved the story and how each chapter was told from the perspective of each character. It kept things moving along well.
I am buying the rest to read. You will like these mysteries.
The author certainly tackles a wide range of topics.
